“Breathe” is a
reflection on the crazy times we have all been living through, a celebration of our ability
to support each other; to move, breathe, and dance together despite it all.
“We started
work on this piece in September 2020. It was an incredible lifeline, both for the dancers,
who had been unable to work together for more than 6 months, and for myself. I really wanted
to find a safe way to share live performance at a time when we were all wedded to screens as
our only connection with the outside world. So many things were impacting our lives last
year, from the pandemic, to unprecedented wild fires, to a fundamental shift in the fight
for Black Lives. As dancers we give voice to our experiences through the body. The most
fundamental way of connecting to the physical impact of stress on our body is through
breath. I wanted to use breath as a way of reflecting upon all of the challenges of the last
18 months, and also recognize the importance of breath, and of the physical body, as a
                            vessel for healing and resilience.”
This performance was
